First walks in Anchorage.
For everyday walks in Anchorage, keep your dog securely leashed and under control. Two featured fenced dog areas, the local rules, and a calm start to a new dog’s first week.
The rules, in short
From the municipal dog-area rules and Code Chapters 17.10 and 17.15.
- 1Everyday walks: securely leashed and under competent control; specific exceptions apply
- 2Designated off-leash areas: legally licensed dogs with current rabies vaccination
- 3Leash on when entering and leaving the dog area
- 4Stay with your dog, keep control and carry a leash
- 5Pick up waste and fill any holes your dog digs
Hours, exceptions & the fine print
Section 17.10.010 allows command control only when the activity requires an unrestrained animal, the location is appropriate for that activity, and impact on the public is minimized. All three tests apply. Other exceptions cover sanctioned off-leash areas, demonstrations at shows or events, and humane restraint or containment in vehicles or enclosed containers. Ordinary off-leash walking, skiing or biking does not qualify outside designated dog areas. Under 17.10.090, classified dogs and female dogs in heat are prohibited in dog areas; owners remain responsible and must follow posted rules. Section 17.15 includes short-visit and nonresident-competition licensing provisions. License terms can be up to one, two or three years and depend on rabies coverage. Check current licensing requirements rather than relying on an age or fee summary here.
The first week
The same calm start we suggest everywhere - on Anchorage’s streets.
- 1Leash, quiet streets, short and sniffy - calm hours, near home, ending before your dog is wound up. An off-leash area is not day-one material for a brand-new dog.
- 2Sniffing is the point - let your dog pause and sniff instead of focusing on distance. More on the sniff walk.
- 3Settle first, explore later - more on the first days: a routine for a newly adopted dog and a calm start to every walk.
The dog parks, for later
Once your dog has settled. Two featured fenced off-leash areas, not a complete list of Anchorage dog areas:
- 1Arctic Benson Park - a fenced off-leash area
- 2Whisper Faith Kovach Park - a fenced off-leash area at 1904 Lore Road
Check current signs and closures before visiting. Bring a leash and waste bags, remain with your dog and keep control. The municipal dog-area page lists other options and area-specific restrictions. Map pins show park locations, not exact dog-run entrances.
Pins mark park-level locations, not exact dog-run entrances.
Good to know
Worth knowing
University Lake trails can close to off-leash seasonally (posted on site), and swimming is out for dogs and people there - nesting birds and protective beavers. At Connors Bog, off-leash shrinks to the designated area once skijoring trails are groomed. The muni can also post areas where dogs aren’t allowed at all, leashed or not.
