City walks

First walks in Columbus.

Columbus asks that dogs stay securely leashed or under direct control anywhere off their own property - and direct control means the dog comes, sits and stays on command, in the code’s own words. The city’s own rules, its five dog parks, and how we suggest starting a new dog’s first week.

The rules, in short

From the Columbus City Code and the Recreation & Parks pages.

  • 1Securely leashed or under direct control anywhere off your property
  • 2Direct control = instant come, sit, stay - the code’s own test
  • 3Off-leash play: the city’s five dog parks
  • 4Dog license (Franklin County) and tag worn at all times
  • 5Rabies vaccination from three months
  • 6Pick up after your dog, immediately
Hours, exceptions & the fine print

The at-large rule (2327.11) is strict liability, a third-degree misdemeanor for dogs. In the dog parks the department’s rules add: handlers 18 or older (children under 13 only with an adult), no more than two dogs, dogs at least four months old, a leash in hand at all times, no aggressive, sick or in-heat dogs, bite-sized treats only, and chokers and spiked collars off in the gate area.
