City walks

First walks in Corpus Christi.

In Corpus Christi, a dog beyond a secure yard stays on a leash or lead under effective control - and off-leash time belongs to the city’s five dog parks. The city’s own rules and how we suggest starting a new dog’s first week.

The rules, in short

From the Corpus Christi Code of Ordinances and the city’s dog parks page.

Hours, exceptions & the fine print

Corpus Christi’s rule: every animal but a cat must stay "under restraint" - and restraint means caged, on a leash or lead attached to a collar or harness "under the effective control of a responsible person and obedient to that person’s commands," inside a fully fenced yard at home, or properly tethered (§§6-101, 6-1; the code sets no general leash-length cap). Dogs are also deemed restrained at shows and field trials, in obedience training with the handler holding a five-to-ten-foot leash, as service animals, and working with peace officers (§6-1). Tethering to a stationary object is banned - running lines and trolleys only, with a cable of at least ten feet (§6-160). Violations are strict-liability public-health offenses, $50 to $500 plus costs, each day separate (§6-2).
