First walks in Dallas.
Dallas asks that dogs stay restrained at all times, and off-leash only in the city’s dog parks. The city’s own rules, the Park & Recreation list, and how we suggest starting a new dog’s first week.
The rules, in short
From the Dallas City Code and the Animal Services and Park department’s own pages.
- 1Restrained at all times - fenced, enclosed, or on a tether you hold
- 2Off-leash only in the city’s designated off-leash sites
- 3Rabies vaccination and a microchip
- 4Spayed or neutered by six months
- 5Pick up after your dog
- 6Three dogs at most per person at the park
Hours, exceptions & the fine print
Dallas’s rules go further than most cities: rabies vaccination, a microchip, and spay or neuter by six months are all required by Chapter 7. The posted dog-park rules add: leash on entering and leaving, no females in heat, no food or treats, prong and spiked collars come off, and violations carry fines up to $2,000.
The first week
The same calm start we suggest everywhere - on Dallas’s streets.
- 1Leash, quiet streets, short and sniffy - calm hours, near home, ending before your dog is wound up. An off-leash area is not day-one material for a brand-new dog.
- 2Sniffing is the point - let your dog pause and sniff instead of focusing on distance. More on the sniff walk.
- 3Settle first, explore later - more on the first days: a routine for a newly adopted dog and a calm start to every walk.
The dog parks, for later
Once your dog has settled. Dallas Park and Recreation runs four off-leash dog parks across the city, plus one association-run park in Deep Ellum:
- 1Bark Park Central - 2530 Commerce St, downtown Deep Ellum
- 2White Rock Lake Dog Park - 8000 E Mockingbird Ln, East Dallas
- 3Wagging Tail Dog Park - 5841 Keller Springs Rd, North Dallas
- 4NorthBark Dog Park - 4899 Gramercy Oaks Dr, far North Dallas
- 5Deep Ellum Dog Park - 2540 Commerce St, run by the Deep Ellum Association
The parks close for maintenance and rain - the city runs a rain-out hotline at 214-614-6711 before you head out. Bark Park Central and the Deep Ellum Dog Park sit about 30 meters apart on Commerce Street; they are two real, adjacent parks, not a duplicate listing.
Pins mark the park or its listed access point, not the exact off-leash boundary.
Good to know
Worth knowing
Dallas’s restraint rule (7-3.1) sets no leash-length limit - your dog must be restrained at all times by a fence, a structure, or a tether held by you - and the code’s own exception (7-3.1(c)) is a dog in an off-leash site established under section 32-6.1. The park-leash and scoop rules (32-6 and 7-21) mean leashed in every park outside the off-leash sites, and no defecating anywhere in the city without removing it. The spay-neuter mandate (7-4.10) has been in force since 2017, with limited exceptions.
