City walks

First walks in Fresno.

In Fresno, a dog off your property stays on a strong leash, held securely and continuously - with eleven city dog parks for off-leash play. The city’s own rules and how we suggest starting a new dog’s first week.

The rules, in short

From the Fresno Municipal Code, the city attorney’s memo, and the city’s parks page.

  • 1Off your property: a strong leash, held securely and continuously
  • 2Off-leash play: the city’s eleven dog parks

  • 5At the dog parks: pick up after your dog
  • 6A dog at large is a public nuisance - and can be impounded
Hours, exceptions & the fine print

Fresno’s code makes it unlawful to cause, permit or allow a dog to be at large (10-308), and defines at large as being on any public street, alley or other public place - or on an unenclosed lot - unless the dog is “securely and continuously held by the owner or custodian of such animal by a strong leash suitable for maintaining control of the animal,” securely confined to the premises by a suitably strong leash, or confined within an automobile (10-301(b)). The code sets no leash-length cap. A dog at large is declared a public nuisance and may be impounded (10-308(d), 10-310), and the city attorney notes owners can face misdemeanor prosecution. Off-leash, the city’s own exception is its eleven dog parks: “Dogs may run off-leash provided they are well behaved,” with no food - human or pet - allowed inside, and handlers must pick up after their dogs (city parks page).
