First walks in Gilbert.
For everyday walks in Gilbert, use a leash no longer than six feet and keep direct control. Check designated off-leash areas and current lake-work notices before visiting. The rules, the parks, and a calm plan for a new dog’s first week.
The rules, in short
From the Gilbert code, the Maricopa County license page and the town’s park pages.
- 1Everyday walks: use a leash no longer than six feet and keep direct control; exceptions apply
- 2Two featured dog parks: Cosmo and Crossroads - check open areas before visiting
- 3Keep the Maricopa County dog license current; check current requirements and fees
- 4Rabies vaccination required before the license is issued
- 5Scoop: immediately, into a sealed container
- 6Cosmo rules: three dogs per visit; puppies must be older than four months
Hours, exceptions & the fine print
For ordinary walks, use a leash no longer than six feet and keep direct control. Section 6-60 includes designated off-leash areas and specific livestock, hunting, kennel-event, racing and qualified obedience-training exceptions. Training requires the owner or trainer to have a suitable six-foot leash and the dog to be enrolled in, or have graduated from, an obedience school. Follow posted park rules. Section 6-62 requires immediate pickup and disposal in a closed or sealed container, with prior-property-consent and disability exceptions.
The first week
The same calm start we suggest everywhere - on Gilbert’s streets.
- 1Leash, quiet streets, short and sniffy - calm hours, near home, ending before your dog is wound up. An off-leash area is not day-one material for a brand-new dog.
- 2Sniffing is the point - let your dog pause and sniff instead of focusing on distance. More on the sniff walk.
- 3Settle first, explore later - more on the first days: a routine for a newly adopted dog and a calm start to every walk.
The dog parks, for later
Once your dog has settled. Two featured fenced dog parks, each with separate areas for active and timid dogs:
- 1Cosmo Dog Park - 2502 E Ray Rd, about four fenced acres; lake and beach work: check which areas are open
- 2Crossroads District Park Dog Park - 2155 E Knox Rd, two fenced acres; check current park construction notices
Cosmo has rotating active-area maintenance and lake/beach work. The park page and town news give conflicting end dates for the lake work, so do not assume the lake or beach is open. Check current signs and open areas before travelling. Crossroads has lower-basin and lake construction notices; these do not establish a dog-park closure. Cosmo’s posted rules require leash-on entry and exit, attendance and voice control, current license and vaccination, a visible tag, three dogs per visit and puppies older than four months. Check each park’s own rules. Pins mark park-level locations, not exact entrances.

Good to know
Worth knowing
Keep the county dog license and rabies vaccination current, with the tag attached. Maricopa County lists Gilbert among the places it serves. The town and county guidance differ on the licensing-age wording; check the county’s current licensing requirements rather than relying on an age summary here. Licensing runs through the county’s DocuPet service. Bring waste bags, remove waste immediately and dispose of it in a closed or sealed container. Section 6-62 includes prior-property-consent and disability exceptions.
