First walks in Glendale.
For everyday walks in Glendale, keep your dog securely leashed. City parks require a leash no longer than six feet outside designated dog areas. Four city-listed dog parks offer off-leash space, with different maintenance days. The rules, the parks, and a calm plan for a new dog's first week.
The rules, in short
From the Glendale City Code, Arizona law, and the city’s own pages.
- 1City parks: a leash no longer than six feet outside designated dog areas; check the fine print
- 2Off-leash play: four fenced city dog parks - Foothills, Sahuaro Ranch, Northern Horizon, Heroes
- 3Rabies shot kept current - required before the license is issued
- 4Keep licensing and rabies protection current; check current county requirements and fees
- 5In parks: keep physical control and pick up immediately (fine print)
- 6Check posted park hours and the weekly maintenance day before visiting
Hours, exceptions & the fine print
Glendale section 6-6(d) recognizes a sufficient-strength leash, chain, rope or cord no longer than six feet, plus exceptions for livestock work, hunting, kennel-club events, approved racing, qualifying active obedience/hunting/kennel training under owner or trainer control while carrying a suitable six-foot leash, and an enclosure that actually confines the dog. Section 6-6(a) separately addresses rabies-quarantine areas; it is not a blanket statewide walking rule. Arizona section 11-1012(D) requires physical leash restraint in public parks or school grounds, or confinement in a car, cage or similar enclosure, with recognized kennel-club, school or park-event exceptions. Follow city-park leash rules outside designated off-leash areas, maintain control and remove waste.
The first week
The same calm start we suggest everywhere - on Glendale’s streets.
- 1Leash, quiet streets, short and sniffy - calm hours, near home, ending before your dog is wound up. An off-leash area is not day-one material for a brand-new dog.
- 2Sniffing is the point - let your dog pause and sniff instead of focusing on distance. More on the sniff walk.
- 3Settle first, explore later - more on the first days: a routine for a newly adopted dog and a calm start to every walk.
The dog parks, for later
Once your dog has settled. The city lists four dog parks, with the amenities and maintenance days below. Foothills and Heroes rotate sections monthly; check the sign for the open side.
- 1Foothills Park Dog Park - 57th Ave & Union Hills Dr; two sections rotated monthly, grass, shade, water, benches, agility on the east side; closed Wednesdays
- 2Sahuaro Ranch Park Dog Park - 63rd Ave & Mountain View Rd; small-dog area, water fountains, waste stations, agility equipment; closed Tuesdays
- 3Northern Horizon Park Dog Park - 63rd Ave & Northern Ave; separate large and small areas, water, shade trees, benches; closed Mondays
- 4Glendale Heroes Park Dog Park - 83rd Ave & Bethany Home Rd; two sections rotated monthly, grass, shade, water, benches; closed Thursdays
At every dog park: dogs must be licensed and vaccinated and wear their identification and permit tags; the owner stays with the dog and carries a visible leash; leash going in and coming out; three dogs per visit at most; children under 13 with an adult; no food or dog treats; no females in heat. General city-park hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. unless posted otherwise, and each park’s maintenance closure is posted on the city’s dog parks page. Pins mark named park-level locations, not exact dog-run gates.
Pins mark the park or its listed access point, not the exact off-leash boundary.
Good to know
Worth knowing
The city and county pages use different licensing language. Glendale section 6-4 refers to dogs four months or older kept in the city for at least thirty consecutive days, with a license period no longer than the revaccination period; Maricopa County's current service page says licensing from three months and annual renewal. Check the current requirement with County Animal Care & Control rather than relying on a single age or period here. Section 6-4.1 provides a permitted-kennel route for dogs remaining in controlled kennel conditions. Section 6-6(b) has tag-wearing exceptions for qualifying livestock, hunting, kennel-club and racing activities and transport, provided dogs are vaccinated, licensed and controlled. These do not remove the separate dog-park admission rule requiring licensed, vaccinated, tagged dogs. Check current fees rather than relying on an older amount.
