First walks in Lubbock.
For everyday walks in Lubbock, keep your dog securely leashed. The city lists four designated dog parks for off-leash time; follow their posted rules. The rules, the parks, and a calm plan for a new dog’s first week.
The rules, in short
From the Lubbock Code of Ordinances and the city’s dog parks page.
- 1Everyday walks: keep your dog securely leashed; use designated dog parks for off-leash play (fine print)
- 2Off-leash play: four city dog parks, all fenced
- 3Registration over four months, subject to the temporary-visit exemption; current rabies vaccination required
- 4Registration renews annually; check current city fees and any applicable waiver
- 5Scoop: remove it - and carry the means to, or it’s an offense
- 6At the dog park: collar with current rabies tag and ID; leashed in and out
Hours, exceptions & the fine print
Lubbock’s rule is restraint with no length cap: off your own premises, a dog must be "physically and continually restrained by some person by means of a leash or chain of proper strength and length that precludes the animal from making unsolicited contact with any person, their clothing, their property, or their premises" - otherwise the dog is "at large," and permitting that is an offense (§§4.01.001, 4.04.001(c)(19)). The definition excludes permitted exhibitions when an animal is under immediate physical or vocal control and completely and immediately obeys commands. The city separately designates four dog parks with posted off-leash rules. These are specific contexts, not a general permission to let a dog roam. Restraint also includes a cage or leash or rope under direct control of a person strong enough to control the animal.
The first week
The same calm start we suggest everywhere - on Lubbock’s streets.
- 1Leash, quiet streets, short and sniffy - calm hours, near home, ending before your dog is wound up. An off-leash area is not day-one material for a brand-new dog.
- 2Sniffing is the point - let your dog pause and sniff instead of focusing on distance. More on the sniff walk.
- 3Settle first, explore later - more on the first days: a routine for a newly adopted dog and a calm start to every walk.
The dog parks, for later
Once your dog has settled. Four city dog parks, all fenced, all with a separate small-dog area:
- 1McAlister Dog Park - 6007 Marsha Sharp Fwy (NE corner off the frontage road); five acres in three gated areas: small, agility, large
- 2Canyon Run Dog Park - 102 E Cesar E. Chavez Dr, inside Mackenzie Park; 2.64-acre large-dog area plus a 1-acre small-dog side
- 3Hub City Unleashed Dog Park - 46th St & Avenue U, inside Clapp Park; 1.1-acre large-dog area plus a small-dog side
- 4Pioneer Dog Park - 6th St & Avenue T, inside Pioneer Park; separate large and small fenced areas
Shared hours at all four: Monday noon to midnight, Tuesday through Sunday 6 a.m. to midnight - follow current posted signs. Posted rules: no puppies under four months, human or dog food, treats, glass containers, sick dogs or aggressive dogs; fill any holes; children under thirteen need adult supervision. Dogs should be under voice control. Leashed entering and leaving; waste picked up immediately; you stay inside, supervising, with the leash ready; handlers sixteen and up; every dog wears a collar with a current rabies tag and ID. These are the dog parks on the city’s page as of November 2026 - follow posted signs. Pins show the listed parks or access points, not exact dog-run entrances.
Pins mark the park or its listed access point, not the exact off-leash boundary.
Good to know
Worth knowing
Registration and the rabies shot come as a pair: every dog over four months is registered with the city and wears traceable ID, and the tag is issued only with a current rabies vaccination - so the shot comes first (§4.03.004). Animals temporarily in the city for no more than fourteen days are exempt from §4.03.004. Police and assistance animals are exempt from the registration and identification-tag fee, not the other requirements. Registration renews annually; fees are set by the current fiscal budget, with code-listed waiver categories (§4.02.041), so check the current charge with the city. The rabies certificate runs one or three years depending on the vaccine. Scooping has teeth: it is an offense to let your dog defecate on public or someone else’s property without removing it - and separately an offense to be there without the means to pick it up (§4.01.002). The cleanup section provides affirmative defenses for the handler’s own or controlled property, a specifically trained assistance dog with its special-needs handler, prior property-owner consent, and a police canine in official use. Violations can be Class C misdemeanors.
