First walks in Miami.
Miami asks for a leash in public - dogs are welcome where a park specifically allows them, and off-leash only in marked dog parks. The county’s own rules, the city’s park pages, and how we suggest starting a new dog’s first week.
The rules, in short
From Miami-Dade County’s pet-violation FAQ and Dog Parks page, Florida Statutes § 767.14, and the city’s own park pages.
- 1The county cites dogs that run at large
- 2Rabies vaccination and a county license tag
- 3Dogs on leash in the city parks that allow them
- 4Off-leash only inside marked dog park areas
- 5Each park posts its own hours
Hours, exceptions & the fine print
The county’s citation office lists the most common pet violations as no rabies vaccination, no license tag, and a dog running at large - County Code ch. 5, §§ 5.6, 5.7 and 5.20, per the county’s own FAQ.
The first week
The same calm start we suggest everywhere - on Miami’s streets.
- 1Leash, quiet streets, short and sniffy - calm hours, near home, ending before your dog is wound up. An off-leash area is not day-one material for a brand-new dog.
- 2Sniffing is the point - let your dog pause and sniff instead of focusing on distance. More on the sniff walk.
- 3Settle first, explore later - more on the first days: a routine for a newly adopted dog and a calm start to every walk.
The dog parks, for later
Once your dog has settled. Four city parks with marked dog areas, from the city’s own pages:
- 1Margaret Pace Park - 1745 N Bayshore Dr
- 2Legion Memorial Park - 6447 NE 7th Ave
- 3David T. Kennedy Park - 2400 S Bayshore Dr
- 4Blanche Park - 3045 Shipping Ave
Hours differ by park - Margaret Pace runs 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Kennedy and Blanche sunrise to sunset, Legion shorter weekend hours. The city’s Parks Directory marks “Dog Park” on each park’s page.
Pins mark the park or its listed access point, not the exact off-leash boundary.
Good to know
Worth knowing
Since October 2023, Florida state law bars local rules that target specific breeds, weights or sizes (Fla. Stat. § 767.14). The big county-run dog parks - Haulover, Tropical, Amelia Earhart - sit outside the city and post their own rules: leashed until inside the fence, rabies tag displayed, current vaccinations, at most three dogs per person.
