First walks in St. Louis.
For everyday walks in St. Louis, use a secure leash no longer than six feet and keep control. Two featured fenced dog parks, both requiring membership, and a calm plan for a new dog’s first week.
The rules, in short
From current City Code 10.04.220, pet registration and the two park operators.
- 1Everyday walks: secure leash up to six feet, held continuously by someone able to control the dog; exceptions apply
- 2Both featured dog parks require approved membership before access
- 3Keep rabies vaccination and required registration current; visitor rules differ
- 4Southwest City requires current vet-administered rabies and Bordetella proof
- 5Carry a leash, stay with your dog and pick up waste
- 6Bring water; no food inside the dog exercise area
Hours, exceptions & the fine print
Section 10.04.220 includes secure confinement in an automobile or enclosed lot or premises, permitted trials or shows, and designated fenced City dog exercise areas under competent control. Dog exercise rules include vaccination and licensing tags, visual and voice control, no unattended dogs, no more than three dogs, no dogs under four months, and no sick, aggressive, externally parasitized or in-heat dogs. Children under fourteen need an adult; Southwest City additionally prohibits children under eight. Prohibited collars include choke, prong, pinch and spiked collars. Operators may require membership and impose additional rules. Read the current park rules and closure notices before visiting.
The first week
The same calm start we suggest everywhere - on St. Louis’s streets.
- 1Leash, quiet streets, short and sniffy - calm hours, near home, ending before your dog is wound up. An off-leash area is not day-one material for a brand-new dog.
- 2Sniffing is the point - let your dog pause and sniff instead of focusing on distance. More on the sniff walk.
- 3Settle first, explore later - more on the first days: a routine for a newly adopted dog and a calm start to every walk.
The dog parks, for later
Once your dog has settled. Two featured fenced membership dog parks, not a complete city inventory:
- 1Fox Park Dog Park - membership, dues and waiver required; locked member gate
- 2Southwest City Dog Park at Willmore Park - approved annual membership; current vet-administered rabies and Bordetella proof
Apply before visiting: neither featured park is a walk-in public dog run. Fox members receive gate access after joining. Southwest City requires an approved application, photo, waiver, membership tag and personal access fob; no canine guests. Check current Tuesday maintenance and spring reseeding closures. No food inside; carry a leash, stay in visual and voice control and pick up. Pins mark park-level locations, not exact dog-run entrances.

Good to know
Worth knowing
City pet registration and rabies vaccination follow the vaccine’s one- or three-year term. Visitors must carry immunization proof covering the visit; the city says registration is not needed unless the pet stays longer than thirty days. Park membership is separate from city registration. Southwest City specifically requires vet-administered Bordetella and rabies proof and approved membership; do not treat that extra vaccine requirement as a citywide law. Follow each operator’s current access and maintenance notices rather than assuming an open gate or fixed hours.
