First walks in Tampa.
Tampa asks for a leash, six feet max, in its parks - with the city’s 18 listed dog parks and beaches for later. The city’s own rules, the official list, and how we suggest starting a new dog’s first week.
The rules, in short
From Tampa Code § 16-38 and the city’s dog park rules page.
- 1Leash, max 6 ft, in city parks
- 2Off-leash only in designated areas
- 3Leashed on the way in and out
- 4Clean up after your dog - and fill holes
- 5Licensed, ID tags, current rabies
- 6Inside a dog park, at most two off-leash dogs per person
Hours, exceptions & the fine print
Dogs must be at least four months old, never left unattended, and under voice command; dogs in heat stay home. Dogs deemed dangerous under Florida law are barred from all city-managed park land.
The first week
The same calm start we suggest everywhere - on Tampa’s streets.
- 1Leash, quiet streets, short and sniffy - calm hours, near home, ending before your dog is wound up. An off-leash area is not day-one material for a brand-new dog.
- 2Sniffing is the point - let your dog pause and sniff instead of focusing on distance. More on the sniff walk.
- 3Settle first, explore later - more on the first days: a routine for a newly adopted dog and a calm start to every walk.
The dog parks and beaches, for later
Once your dog has settled. Six of the 18 dog parks and beaches the city lists:
- 1Curtis Hixon Dog Park - 600 N Ashley Dr
- 2Urbanski Dog Park at Al Lopez - 4810 N Himes Ave
- 3Davis Islands Dog Park & Beach - 1002 Severn St
- 4Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park - 1001 N Boulevard
- 5Palma Ceia Park - 2200 Marti St
- 6Picnic Island Dog Beach - 7409 Picnic Island Blvd
The other twelve - Angus Goss, Kotfila, Gadsden, Giddens, Henry & Ola, Herman Massey, Madison Street, New Tampa Rotary, Rowlett, Vila Brothers, Washington Street and Waterworks (Queenie’s) - are in the sources under Good to know. All are fenced, or fenced and bounded by water, per the city.
Pins mark the park or its listed access point, not the exact off-leash boundary.
Good to know
Worth knowing
Dogs aren’t allowed on city beaches unless it’s a designated dog beach - Davis Islands and Picnic Island are the two - and not on city boardwalks or narrow passageways at all, service animals excepted. The city also posts recurring maintenance closures: Curtis Hixon closes Tuesday and Friday, 2 to 4 p.m.; Urbanski at Al Lopez closes Thursdays until noon; Queenie’s at Water Works closes Tuesdays until noon.
