Picking a name that works

A name your dog hears every day works best when it is short and easy to call: one or two syllables, a clear sound, and not too close to a word you use for something else (“Kit” and “Sit” are easy to mix up). Say it out loud at the door, in the park, and in a happy voice before you decide.

Once the name is chosen, the fun part is teaching your dog that it always means good things. Our guide on how to teach your dog its name walks through it in a few short sessions, and the first-week checklist covers everything else for the first days at home.
