First walks in Albuquerque.
Albuquerque requires a leash, eight feet max, in any street or public place - with fenced dog parks for later. The city’s own rules, the official list, and how we suggest starting a new dog’s first week.
The rules, in short
From the city ordinance, as quoted by Animal Welfare, and the parks department’s own pages.
- 1Leash, max 8 ft, in any street or public place
- 2Off-leash only in designated dog parks
- 3Leash on until inside the double gate
- 4Clean up after your dog
- 5Voice control, in sight, at all times
- 6Civil fines start at $200
Hours, exceptions & the fine print
Dog park hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. unless posted. Inside: no more than three dogs per person, puppies over six months, and children under 12 only with an adult.
The first week
The same calm start we suggest everywhere - on Albuquerque’s streets.
- 1Leash, quiet streets, short and sniffy - calm hours, near home, ending before your dog is wound up. An off-leash area is not day-one material for a brand-new dog.
- 2Sniffing is the point - let your dog pause and sniff instead of focusing on distance. More on the sniff walk.
- 3Settle first, explore later - more on the first days: a routine for a newly adopted dog and a calm start to every walk.
The dog park list, for later
Once your dog has settled. Six of the 31 dog parks on the city’s list - all fenced, open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.:
- 1North Domingo Baca - lights, 7520 Corona NE
- 2Los Altos Park - lights, 10100 Lomas NE
- 3USS Bullhead Park - lights, 1606 San Pedro SE
- 4Wells Dog Park - lights, 500 Mountain Rd NW
- 5West Mesa Dog Park - crusher-fine surface, 6705 Fortuna NW
- 6Montessa Park - 3615 Los Picaros SE
The other 25 parks, with addresses and winter fountain notes, are on the city’s dog parks page, linked in the sources under Good to know.
Pins mark the park or its listed access point, not the exact off-leash boundary.
Good to know
Worth knowing
Hidden Park (McDuffie) is not an off-leash park, despite its reputation - the city asks for leashes there. And in winter the dog park fountains are turned off, so bring water.
