First walks in San Francisco.
San Francisco asks for a leash, except in designated exercise areas - the city lists 36 dog play areas for later. The city’s own rules, the official list, and how we suggest starting a new dog’s first week.
The rules, in short
From the city’s Dog Play Areas page and its summary of the Health Code.
- 1Leashed or tethered, except in designated areas
- 2Stay with your dog at all times
- 3Pick up and remove dog waste
- 4Keep vaccinations and licenses current
- 5Control barking and noise
- 6Prevent digging and destructive behavior
Hours, exceptions & the fine print
Dog walkers are welcome in the play areas - the city asks for no more than eight dogs per walker.
The first week
The same calm start we suggest everywhere - on San Francisco’s streets.
- 1Leash, quiet streets, short and sniffy - calm hours, near home, ending before your dog is wound up. An off-leash area is not day-one material for a brand-new dog.
- 2Sniffing is the point - let your dog pause and sniff instead of focusing on distance. More on the sniff walk.
- 3Settle first, explore later - more on the first days: a routine for a newly adopted dog and a calm start to every walk.
The play areas, for later
Once your dog has settled. Six of the 36 dog play areas the city lists:
- 1Golden Gate Park Dog Play Area 1 - one of four in the park, MLK Jr Dr & Bowling Green Dr
- 2Mission Dolores Park - off-leash in the center, Dolores St & 19th St
- 3Alamo Square - Hayes St
- 4Duboce Park - Scott St
- 5Bernal Heights - Bernal Heights Blvd
- 6Alta Plaza - Jackson St & Steiner St
The city’s full list is linked in the sources under Good to know.
Pins mark the park or its listed access point, not the exact off-leash boundary.
Good to know
Worth knowing
Golden Gate Park alone has four dog play areas, including an all-sand training area in the northwest corner of the park.
