First walks in Chandler.
For everyday walks in Chandler, use a leash no longer than six feet and keep control. Two featured fenced dog parks, local rules, and a calm first week. Check maintenance closures before heading out.
The rules, in short
From Chandler Code 14-22 and 31-12, the dog park pages and county licensing guidance.
- 1Everyday walks: six-foot-or-shorter leash and control; exceptions apply
- 2Two featured fenced dog parks: Shawnee and Paseo Vista
- 3Keep the county dog license and rabies vaccination current
- 4Leash until inside the fence; carry a leash for each dog
- 5Dog parks: no children under twelve; no food or smoking
- 6No more than three dogs per person; stay close and pick up
Hours, exceptions & the fine print
Section 14-22 includes suitable-enclosure and specific livestock, hunting, kennel-club-event, approved-racing and qualified obedience-training exceptions. Training requires an enrolled or graduated dog, owner or trainer control, and a suitable leash no longer than six feet carried by the trainer. Section 31-12 is the current park rule; the operator page still quotes older 31.2.4 wording. Current 31-12 requires a licensed, vaccinated dog at least four months old in a dog park. Keep voice control and your dog in sight; remove aggression immediately, do not bring a dog in season, and keep people off dog agility equipment. Follow posted operating hours and closures. Bring water, but no food inside the dog park.
The first week
The same calm start we suggest everywhere - on Chandler’s streets.
- 1Leash, quiet streets, short and sniffy - calm hours, near home, ending before your dog is wound up. An off-leash area is not day-one material for a brand-new dog.
- 2Sniffing is the point - let your dog pause and sniff instead of focusing on distance. More on the sniff walk.
- 3Settle first, explore later - more on the first days: a routine for a newly adopted dog and a calm start to every walk.
The dog parks, for later
Once your dog has settled. Two featured fenced dog parks, not a complete city inventory:
- 1Shawnee Dog Park - 1400 W Mesquite Street; regular maintenance closure all day Tuesday
- 2Paseo Vista Recreation Area Dog Park - 3850 S McQueen Road; regular Thursday maintenance closure until 2:30 p.m.
Check current signs and maintenance notices before travelling. Snedigar’s small-section fence repair is a separate notice, not a closure of these two featured parks. Dog park rules include no children under twelve, no food or smoking, no more than three dogs per person, voice control and visual supervision, immediate removal of aggression and waste pickup. Leash until inside the fence and carry a leash for each dog. Pins mark park-level locations, not exact dog-run entrances.

Good to know
Worth knowing
Maricopa County handles dog licensing. The county and Chandler code differ in their licensing-age wording; check current county requirements rather than using an age summary here. Section 14-20 requires a veterinarian-signed rabies certificate before licensing. Dog park admission has its own rule in current 31-12: a licensed and vaccinated dog at least four months old. The operator page’s older extract says older than four months, so use current code for that boundary. No children under twelve are allowed inside the dog park; the rule for bringing a dog to other park areas is different. Follow current signs and keep water separate from food, which is prohibited inside.
