The Walking Club
City walks

First walks in Chicago.

Chicago asks that everyday public walks stay leashed and under control - and its designated dog friendly areas allow off-leash play. The city’s own rules, the Park District’s official list, and how we suggest starting a new dog’s first week.

The rules, in short

From the Chicago Municipal Code, the Park District, and the city’s Animal Care and Control pages.

  • 1Leashed and under control on everyday public walks
  • 2Use designated dog friendly areas for off-leash play
  • 3City license and rabies tags, over four months
  • 4A separate $10 area permit, carried at the parks
  • 5Pick up after your dog
  • 6Three dogs per person at the park
Hours, exceptions & the fine print

The Park District’s posted rules add: leashed before you enter and after you leave, a current rabies vaccination for every dog, no puppies under four months and no females in heat. A spayed or neutered dog’s city license is $5 a year; an unaltered dog’s is $50. The dog friendly areas also need their own permit: $10 per dog per calendar year, sold at participating vets, and you must carry it at the park. The vet issues it against a current city license or proof of rabies vaccination, plus a fecal test for parasites and the listed shots (distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus, bordetella, leptospirosis). Using a park without the permit carries a $500 fine.
