First walks in McKinney.
In McKinney, a dog in a public place stays on a leash no longer than six feet, and two city dog parks cover the off-leash days. The rules, the parks, and a calm plan for a new dog’s first week.
The rules, in short
From the City of McKinney’s own pages.
- 1Out in public: a leash no longer than six feet (fine print)
- 2Off-leash play: Bonnie Wenk and K-9 Corral dog parks
- 3Rabies shot over four months - the tag stays on the collar
- 4Dog park hours: both parks close 11 p.m.; Bonnie Wenk rests two Wednesday mornings a month
- 5No tethering or chaining - it is an ordinance violation (fine print)
- 6Pick up after your dog - the posted park rule says so (fine print)
Hours, exceptions & the fine print
McKinney’s rule, in the city’s own words: "All pets must be on a leash no longer than six feet when in public places", and at home they must be "confined to the owner’s property within an adequate fence" (the city’s Animal Services page, stating Chapter 26 §26-14). An animal is "running at large" when it is "allowed to roam unrestrained by direct physical control or barriers" - "a violation of city ordinance" (same page, quoted). Two more lines worth knowing: "Leaving an animal tethered or chained is an ordinance violation" (same page, quoted), and the posted dog park rules make owners "responsible for removal and disposal of pet feces" (rule 1, quoted). The off-leash door is the fenced dog park, and McKinney has two.
The first week
The same calm start we suggest everywhere - on McKinney’s streets.
- 1Leash, quiet streets, short and sniffy - calm hours, near home, ending before your dog is wound up. An off-leash area is not day-one material for a brand-new dog.
- 2Sniffing is the point - let your dog pause and sniff instead of focusing on distance. More on the sniff walk.
- 3Settle first, explore later - more on the first days: a routine for a newly adopted dog and a calm start to every walk.
The dog parks, for later
Once your dog has settled. McKinney runs two official off-leash dog parks:
- 1Bonnie Wenk Dog Park - 2996 Virginia Parkway; two fenced acres with separate areas for big and small dogs; open dawn to 11 p.m., closed the first and third Wednesday of each month until 11:30 a.m. for maintenance
- 2K-9 Corral Dog Park - 7450 Van Tuyl Parkway; 1.05 acres, open 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.
The posted rules at both: rabies vaccination current with tags worn, leash on until you are through the double gates, a leash always within reach, no more than three dogs per owner, and the small-dog area is for dogs under 25 pounds. The Bonnie Wenk pin shows the park, with the dog park inside; the K-9 Corral pin is the park’s listed address.
Pins mark the park or its listed access point, not the exact off-leash boundary.
Good to know
Worth knowing
McKinney’s rabies rule comes from the city’s own Animal Services page: dogs and cats over four months must have a current rabies vaccination "and have a valid rabies tag affixed to the collar" (quoted). The city also caps each residence at four dogs and four cats over three months old. A microchip or ID tags are the city’s recommendation for getting a lost dog home - a recommendation, not a requirement.
