First walks in Oakland.
Oakland asks for a leash, six feet max, on public property - with fenced dog play areas and off-leash parks for later. The city’s own rules, the official list, and how we suggest starting a new dog’s first week.
The rules, in short
From Oakland Municipal Code §§ 6.04.070–6.04.080 and the city’s own pages.
- 1Leash, max 6 ft, on public property - no chain leashes
- 2Off-leash only in designated areas
- 3Leash to and from the play area
- 4Clean up immediately
- 5Licensed, tagged, and vaccinated
- 6In a play area, no more than three dogs per person
Hours, exceptions & the fine print
Inside a play area: puppies under four months, dogs in heat, and un-neutered males stay home; children under 12 come with an adult. Fines run $50 to $500.
The first week
The same calm start we suggest everywhere - on Oakland’s streets.
- 1Leash, quiet streets, short and sniffy - calm hours, near home, ending before your dog is wound up. An off-leash area is not day-one material for a brand-new dog.
- 2Sniffing is the point - let your dog pause and sniff instead of focusing on distance. More on the sniff walk.
- 3Settle first, explore later - more on the first days: a routine for a newly adopted dog and a calm start to every walk.
The dog areas, for later
Once your dog has settled. The city’s five fenced dog play areas, plus one off-leash park:
- 1Grove Shafter Park - MLK Jr Way & 36th St
- 2Hardy Park - 491 Hardy St
- 3Jefferson Square Park - 618 Jefferson St
- 4Joaquin Miller Park
- 5Mosswood Park - 3612 Webster St
- 6Estuary Park - off-leash park, unfenced
The other off-leash parks - Glenn Daniel/King Estate, Park Boulevard Plaza and South Prescott - and the 18 on-leash parks are in the sources under Good to know.
Pins mark the park or its listed access point, not the exact off-leash boundary.
Good to know
Worth knowing
For a pet dog, the designated lists are the whole map: the city code (§ 6.04.080) says dogs are not allowed in other Oakland parks at any time. The 18 on-leash parks are a specific list, not a default.
