First walks in Oklahoma City.
On Oklahoma City’s streets and in its parks, keep your dog on a leash, cord, rope or chain held by someone who can restrain it - the code calls that "direct control". Three city-approved dog parks are the place for off-leash play. The city’s own rules and how we suggest starting a new dog’s first week.
The rules, in short
From the Oklahoma City Municipal Code and the city’s own pages.
- 1In public: leash, cord, rope or chain, with a capable handler
- 2Off-leash play: three city-approved dog parks
- 3Rabies vaccination from four months - metal tag on the collar
- 4Pick up immediately - and carry the bag to do it
- 5Dog parks: handler 18+, spayed or neutered dogs only
- 6At home: a fence, house or tether that reaches no public ground
Hours, exceptions & the fine print
A dog is at-large when it is off your property and not under direct control - the code’s definition of direct control is a leash, cord, rope or chain strong enough to restrain the dog, held by someone capable of restraining it (8-5). Voice control counts only during organized training, showing or field events. Being at-large is a Class "a" offense and the dog can be impounded (8-38); private property with the owner’s consent and the approved dog parks are the exceptions.
The first week
The same calm start we suggest everywhere - on Oklahoma City’s streets.
- 1Leash, quiet streets, short and sniffy - calm hours, near home, ending before your dog is wound up. An off-leash area is not day-one material for a brand-new dog.
- 2Sniffing is the point - let your dog pause and sniff instead of focusing on distance. More on the sniff walk.
- 3Settle first, explore later - more on the first days: a routine for a newly adopted dog and a calm start to every walk.
The dog parks, for later
Once your dog has settled. Oklahoma City approves three off-leash spots:
- 1PAW Park - 3303 NW Grand Blvd - two acres and a pond; membership required (application and shot records, monthly fee)
- 2Scissortail Park Dog Park - S Hudson Ave at SW 7th - half an acre, open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- 3Myriad Gardens Dog Enclosure - 301 W Reno Ave, southeast side - a small downtown run
City code sets the ground rules for every approved dog park: a handler who is 18 or older, spayed or neutered dogs, inside the fence, during posted hours (38-107). PAW Park adds its own: dogs four months and up with a rabies tag, no more than two dogs per handler, no dogs in heat, and children under 10 stay out.
Pins mark the park or its listed access point, not the exact off-leash boundary.
Good to know
Worth knowing
Oklahoma City has no general pet-license requirement - registration shows up in the code only when a dog is reclaimed after running loose. The leash rule has one more quirk: a dog in a vehicle counts as under direct control only if it is safely restrained inside. And no dogs at all are allowed at Martin Park Nature Center.
