Can I take my dog to a hotel?

Many hotels allow dogs. Check the rules, plan the room, and settle your dog in first.
2 min read·Field notes

Short answer: yes, if the hotel allows dogs. Rules, fees and room limits vary, so check before you book.

Before you book

The AKC says to be considerate so that hotels continue to accept dogs, and gives lists of dog-friendly places. Cornell suggests asking whether the destination is really dog-friendly, with safe places to walk and activities you can share.

Settling in

Cornell says dogs should generally not be left alone in a new hotel room until they have had a chance to settle in, usually at least the first 24 hours, depending on temperament. Bring familiar bedding. See a holiday in a new place and restless nights in a new place.

Good guest habits

The AKC asks owners to respect hotel property, staff and other guests so that hotels keep accepting dogs. If your dog barks when you leave, do not leave them alone. See barking when left.

Get the right help

If your dog cannot settle in new places, ask your vet or a qualified trainer for help.
