How do I start scent games with my dog?

Hide treats and let your dog use their nose. Start easy and make it a game.
2 min read·Field notes

Short answer: start with a very easy search for treats and let your dog find them. Scent games are fun, work for puppies and older dogs, and tire the brain.

What the AKC says

The AKC says scent games are fun for dogs of any age, including puppies and older dogs. It says that in these games sniffing is encouraged. An easy way to start is a search for treats. Each time you play, change the location so your dog has to use their nose.

A first game

The AKC suggests starting with one cup and a treat under it while your dog watches. When your dog noses or paws at the cup, praise and lift the cup so they can have the treat.
