Is My Dog Bored? Signs and Simple Ways to Add More to Their Day

Chewed shoes, invented games and a dog who cannot switch off often mean too little to do, not too much energy.
2 min read·Field notes

Most pet dogs were bred for a job, even if that job was keeping someone company all day. Modern life hands them everything for free and leaves long empty hours. A bored dog makes their own fun, and you will rarely like what they choose.

What boredom looks like

Big messes made while you were out. Shredded pillows, tipped trash, unrolled toilet paper. At home, a dog who paces, pesters, barks for no clear reason, or invents games you did not agree to. None of this is naughtiness. It is a dog with a working brain and nothing to point it at.

Two look-alikes to rule out first. If the behavior happens only around your departures and comes with pacing, drooling, or toileting indoors, think separation distress rather than boredom. If it is new or sudden, especially with any change in appetite, sleep, or comfort, book a vet check to rule out pain or illness.

Exercise, with the nose switched on

Physical exercise matters, but a faster walk is not always the answer. A slower walk with time to sniff tires the brain as much as the legs. Vary your routes so there is something new to smell.

Work the brain at home

Mental work takes the edge off as well as physical work, and it fits into small pockets of the day:

Give the dog a job, and get help when days run long

A digging box for the terrier, carrying a toy on walks for the retriever, hide-and-seek for the shadow who follows you everywhere. When your day is simply longer than your dog’s patience, a walker, a sitter, or a good daycare is a legitimate part of the plan, not a defeat.
