Is my dog tired or sick?

Low energy can be mild or serious. If it lasts or comes with other signs, call your vet.

Short answer: low energy can have many causes, and you cannot tell from outside which one. If it lasts, or comes with other signs, call your vet.

What PDSA and the AKC say

PDSA says lethargy is a vague symptom that can point to many problems. It can be mild or serious, and in some cases it comes and goes. The AKC says if your dog is more tired and sluggish than usual, it could be a sign something is not right.

What to do

Note what is different, such as appetite, drinking and toilet habits. Call your vet if it lasts or you are worried. See emergency signs, why dogs sleep so much and vomiting and diarrhea.

Get the right help

Do not wait if your dog collapses, has trouble breathing or will not get up.

This article is general education, not veterinary advice. If your dog seems unwell, is in pain, or something changed suddenly, call your vet. If it could be an emergency, do not wait.
