My dog is a picky eater. What can I do?

A dog who suddenly stops eating needs a vet. A dog who is just fussy may need a steadier routine.
2 min read·Field notes

Short answer: first decide whether this is new. A dog who suddenly eats much less, or who seems unwell, should see a vet. A dog who has always been fussy is a different problem.

Rule out health first

PDSA says a dog who is not eating properly may be unwell and that you should contact your vet. The AKC lists many possible causes for a dog who stops eating and says to know when to call the vet.

If it is a habit

The AKC says some dogs prefer to eat at certain times of day, and that a consistent pattern is often nothing to worry about if your dog eats enough and keeps a healthy weight. It also says mealtime is part of the household routine, and some dogs eat more comfortably when family members are around. See how much to feed and eating only when hand-fed.

Changing food

If you change foods, do it slowly, as in changing food.

Get the right help

Ask your vet about your dog's weight and a feeding plan.

This article is general education, not veterinary advice. If your dog seems unwell, is in pain, or something changed suddenly, call your vet. If it could be an emergency, do not wait.
