Is doggy daycare a good idea?

It suits some dogs. Ask questions, visit first, and watch how your dog copes.
2 min read·Field notes

Short answer: for some dogs yes. It depends on your dog and the daycare.

What the AKC says

The AKC says daycare is the best choice for some dogs, such as those who are well socialized and enjoy other dogs. It says to ask questions, and that a daycare should assess your dog's behavior and personality before accepting them. It also says puppies need a safe outlet for energy and a dependable schedule.

If your dog is unsure

Some dogs find it too much. If your dog refuses to go in, see refusing the daycare door. See also dogs who dislike the dog park.

Get the right help

Ask your vet about vaccine requirements, and watch for signs your dog is stressed after daycare.
